Chapter 5: Welcome Back to the Mansion

Betts and Olive return to the mansion, and Olive learns what her next steps will be in trying to solve the case of McVee Mansion.
 1Felix waits for Betts and Olive the next morning. |  2He starts driving the gals to the mansion. Suddenly something breaks down in his car, causing it to slow down to a halt. |

 3Felix is unable to find what the issue is with his vehicle. |  4Betts suggests to Olive that they might as well head to the mansion, so the two continue onward. |
 5As soon as they reach the mansion, Olive voices her doubts: "What if we can't do anything?" Betts reminds Olive that "We've got to see this thing through to the end." |  6Betts and Olive enter the mansion. |
 7"We know who you are, Vaughn." Olive addresses the spirit, "And we know about Virdia." |  8The gals head upstairs. Olive asks Betts, "Are you sure you want to follow me?" And Betts answers, "Till the end." |
 9They enter a small sewing room. Olive notices a photograph of Vaughn and Virdia together. |  10Virdia's ghost appears; this time, visible to Betts too. Virdia chastises them for coming back, and Olive tries to assure her that they're only there to help. |
 11Olive suddenly pushes Betts away from the ghost, dragging Betts away. However Virdia grabs Betts, and flings her over the railing. |  12Betts crashes through the floor below while Vaughn's spirit shoves Virdia away from Olive. After shoving Virdia away, Vaughn returns for Olive, tossing her outside to safety. |
 13Olive yells that she's not leaving without Betts. Vaughn vanishes back inside the mansion to retrieve Betts. |  14He brings Betts outside to Olive; Betts is unconscious. At first, Olive threatens Vaughn, but then realization hits her: Vaughn isn't the one killing trespassers at the mansion. |
 15Olive drags Betts back to Felix and his car, asking him to take her away from the area. |  16The car's engine mysteriously revs back to life; Olive asks Felix to take Betts to a hospital. The first panel on this page is the only time during the rough draft that I drew any of the character's wings. |
 17Felix drives out of sight, and Olive returns to the mansion. Back in the present day, Betts informs the two toons she's been telling this tale to that there's still more to the story. |  18The story continues with Olive calling for Vaughn. |
 19Vaughn appears to Olive, with several new scars. He reassures Olive that scars heal quickly in the afterlife. He again warns her to leave the mansion. |  20Vaughn gives her a brief rundown of how things work in the mansion; he and another ghost, Dolores, try unsuccessfully to save the trespassers who come to the mansion. Olive tells Vaughn that she wants to help them. |
 21Vaughn tells her to find Gilbert Greene. Before he can say anything more, he is pulled back to the mansion by a different spirit, reminding Olive to find Gilbert. |  22Olive runs off to find Gilbert. |
