Chapter 3: To the Mansion

With Felix's help, Betts and Olive find the mansion, and meet some of the residents within. Felix offers to take the gals to a lighthouse keeper who knows more about the mansion's past.
![]() 1Felix gives Betts directions to the mansion, to which she asks if it's a far walk to get there. | ![]() 2Betts says that Felix could take her and Olive to the mansion since he owns a car. Understandably, he isn't too keen on the idea. |
|---|---|
![]() 3Betts convinces Felix to take them to the mansion. As an aside note, I don't really like the way I wrote this part. It feels a bit manipulative on Betts' part to make Felix drive her and Olive around, so if I ever do plan a rewrite of this story, I'd want to get rid of this part entirely. | ![]() 4Felix drives the gals to the outskirts of town... |
![]() 5...To an old, worn-down path in the woods. Felix tells them that the mansion is down that path, adding, "Please be careful." | ![]() 6"We don't really know what we're getting ourselves into, Betts," Olive says. Betts responds simply: "We've got each other. We'll be fine." |
![]() 7Olive, sensing several spirits at the mansion, doubts she's able to even step foot into the place. Betts reassures her, and the two gals approach the front porch. | ![]() 8"Betts...this place is...alive." "Full of live ghosts, eh?" |
![]() 9Discovering that there's a huge hole in the porch, the two decide to enter the mansion by climbing a tree and into a window on one of the upper levels. | ![]() 10Betts jokes a bit about the dilapidated state of the house. They began to wander around. |
![]() 11As they both descend to the main level of the house, Olive spies old letters and photographs attached to a mirror. However, she's unable to glean any information due to how old and faded they are. | ![]() 12Olive realizes that she's alone, but perks up when she sees a figure disappearing around a corner. |
![]() 13She follows the figure to an empty room. Upon leaving the room, she bumps into Betts. | ![]() 14Olive explains to Betts that she thought she saw her enter the abandoned room. Betts tells her that she thought she saw Olive head in a different direction, which prompts Olive to speculate that the ghosts in the mansion are trying to separate the two. A creaking noise from a different room alerts both gals. |
![]() 15They enter the room; Olive sees a spirit sobbing in a chair, and tells it, "I only want to talk with you. I want to help." | ![]() 16The ghost says that "Nobody can help me," adding, "Why should I let you leave? When I couldn't?" Olive responds, "What do you mean?" |
![]() 17A new entity whisks the gals away from the ghost, plunging them into darkness. | ![]() 18The entity forces them towards the front doors, but before shoving them outside, another spirit rips it apart. |
![]() 19The entity rushes back, succeeding in flinging Betts and Olive outside the mansion. Betts grumbles, "What was that?!" Olive replies, "I think it was a warning!" | ![]() 20Betts suggests that they find out more about who built the mansion and who lived there, thinking that that information might help. And with that, the duo hurries away from the property. |
![]() 21"Maybe we should leave it alone," Olive states. "Maybe a 'stay out' sign would help?" Betts disagrees, "Nobody pays attention to signs! That won't stop anybody." | ![]() 22On their way back to town, Betts urges Olive to open up a bit. Olive explains that nobody had ever accepted the psychic side of her before, and that she "shouldn't have told anyone about it." Again Betts disagrees with Olive, saying that she has a wonderful gift, and "If it wasn't for you, I'd be stuck at that lousy diner right now." |
![]() 23Olive wonders why they didn't find any remains at the mansion, figuring since so many had died there, that there should have been bones or other signs of corpses. She wonders where the bodies are. | ![]() 24Olive adds that ghosts can be tied to many things, including their remains, which keep them held down to a place. Meanwhile, as the sun is setting, they finally make it back to Felix's store, and head inside. |
![]() 25Betts asks Felix if he knows about the mansion's history, and he retorts that he doesn't. | ![]() 26Felix again says that he doesn't want to talk about it... |
![]() 27But knows someone who will. |
